The Glades - Cash Only / Cool Out
“Raw South Florida, Soul Jazz Organ Trio”
Miami’s dynamic jazz, funk and soul scene thrived from the late ’60s to the mid-’80s. South Florida, particularly Miami, was vibrant with jazz. Musicians thrived, playing three to five nights a week, thanks to enthusiastic crowds, numerous venues, and abundant talent. The scene buzzed with energy, fueled by stiff drinks and honest performances. And then it wasn’t.
And yet, a handful of players from that era persisted, keeping the music going in even fewer venues. One thing that stood out was that most were transplants to the Magic City. Northerners, Hispanics, and Afro-Caribbean – all drawn into the city’s Rat Pack cool.
A little over 20 years later, you can hear hands-down delicious jazz in Miami created by a trio of recent transplants. Guitarist Addison Rifkind and drummer Michael Duffy, hailing from Los Angeles, and NYC’s Adam Scone on the Hammond organ, have come together to create something special, The Glades. This is modern jazz. Reverential without nostalgia, tropical without appropriation, groovy and swinging without sounding forced.
The A-side here is Cash Only, a classic East Coast Boogaloo with a Miami twist! A tribute to Miami’s longest running dive bar, Cash Only is a tailfeather shakin’ Friday night ruckus. As beers slide across the bar and palms smack cash down, a heavy organ chord swirls throughout the room from the spinning horns of the Leslie. Dancers shuffle their feet to hip drum beats while jazz guitar weaves in and out of the polyrhythms of the Congas. One of the most exciting Soul Jazz Organ songs of modern times.
On the flip side is Cool Out, oozing with feel good vibes reminiscent of cruising in the backseat of a Cadillac through a Southern California valley. Like a ‘90s Summer jam touched by a Soul Jazz guitarist evoking Wes Mountgomery. Vibes, vibes, vibes all the way! Guitar driven like a classic Cadillac on bags cruising down SoCal highways with ease….
