Tony & the Kings - Son Con Soul / Jibaro
Miami Latin Soul band, Tony & the Kings, release their second record on Tiki Tumbao featuring two original compositions, "Son Con Soul / Jibaro".
“Son Con Soul” is a cinematic experience transporting your ears to Havana Cuba. The air is thick with cigar smoke congregating around a rum bottle sitting atop a stage piano. The sound of a large horn section echos through colonial coral walls, competing with street percussion pouring into the studio through an open door in the back. But this is not your grandfather’s Son. You are not in Havana but Little Havana, Miami, FL. Tony & the Kings honor their Cuban and Puerto Rican roots with this modern tropical arrangement. “Son Con Soul” says it all in its name.
"Jibaro" refers to the original settlers of Puerto Rico, self-reliant farmers and mountain men who worked to sustain the land. In this song Tony is reconnecting with his ancestural roots and thus regaining his identity as man of the land, Boricua. What more appropriate than an Afro Latin Beat song to drive home this deep connection. Driving rhythms lock in as the bass and organ set the stage. Psych guitar and ruckus horns carry the tune into the cosmos. No one does it like Tony & the Kings, "Jibaro" is a testament to that sentiment.
